Fish oil purchasing should consider more than colour and price. Oils from different sources or processing routes may have different compositions and handling requirements. Define the formulation needs first, then review the documents. This makes enquiries more specific and avoids treating appearance as a nutritional measurement.
Define the application and processing category
State the feed application, purchasing volume and any particular fatty acid requirements. Product information should help identify the origin, category and processing status. The names and documents for feed-grade and refined oils must correspond to the product offered; a process description for one category should not automatically be applied to every fish oil.
Distinguish total fat from fatty acid composition
If the formulation requires EPA, DHA or another fatty acid, request the corresponding composition data and confirm the units and reporting basis. The proportion of a fatty acid within total fatty acids is not directly interchangeable with its content in the whole product. Formulation personnel should assess suitability against nutritional targets and the other ingredients being used.
Review quality and storage condition together
Purchasing discussions may include parameters such as acid value and peroxide value. They do not all describe the same aspect of quality, so one result should not replace an overall assessment. Select the relevant tests using the product information, applicable requirements and agreed specification. Reports should correspond to the actual batch and identify test dates, methods and units.
Appearance and odour can reveal possible issues but do not replace analysis. Colour varies with raw materials and processing, among other factors. It cannot independently establish fatty acid content, refining level or compliance with the purchasing specification.
Include packaging and delivery in the enquiry
Containers, seals and storage requirements affect subsequent handling and use. Discuss the delivery format, unit capacity, receiving facilities and intended usage period in advance. On arrival, follow product instructions and check container integrity, labels and batch identity. Preserve records after opening or transferring the oil so that the original identity is not lost.
For long transit times or staged use, confirm storage guidance and the procedure for reporting issues beforehand. A single visual check on arrival is not a complete handling plan.
A useful fish oil enquiry includes
- Feed application, oil category and processing requirements.
- The fatty acid composition data needed.
- Agreed quality parameters, units and batch documents.
- Packaging, quantity, storage and delivery conditions.
- Receiving checks and discrepancy-handling arrangements.
Haili can discuss fish oil categories, product information and supply arrangements against actual availability. Write the formulation's required parameters into the purchasing agreement.
